Our History
To fully appreciate the potential of GDF SUEZ Energy North America, it’s important to see where we’ve come from.
1858
The Universal SUEZ Canal Company--a predecessor of today's GDF SUEZ--is created to construct the SUEZ Canal, just 36 years after the firm's founding in 1822.
Fast forward more than a century and journey half a world away...
1983
The company we know today as GDF SUEZ Energy North America gets its start as CRSS Financial Services in Houston, Texas. Originally, we were involved in independent power generation and the development of power projects.
1990
American Tractebel Corporation, a subsidiary of Tractebel S.A., revises its business strategy from venture capital to focus exclusively on developing, operating, and owning independent power facilities in North America.
1995
CRSS becomes a becomes a subsidiary of Tractebel S.A. North America.
1996
Tractebel begins trading energy commodities in the United States.
1999
SUEZ expands its ownership in Tractebel from 50% to more than 98%.
2000
Tractebel acquires Cabot LNG and its Everett Terminal operations near Boston.
2002
Tractebel establishes a U.S. retail electricity business for the commercial and industrial market.
2005
Tractebel S.A. North American becomes SUEZ Energy North America, taking the historic name of global parent company SUEZ.
2007
SUEZ Energy North America acquires Canadian wind developer Ventus Energy Inc. and launches the company’s North American foray into wind power.
2008
SUEZ Energy North America becomes GDF SUEZ Energy North America in conjunction with its parent company's merger with Gaz de France.
GDF SUEZ Energy North America acquires FirstLight Power Resources' 1,500 MW of predominantly pumped hydro storage and hydro assets.
2011
GDF SUEZ Energy International combines with International Power to form IPR-GDF SUEZ, a publically traded entity in which GDF SUEZ owns 70 percent. The North American entity takes the name IPR-GDF SUEZ North America.
2012
GDF SUEZ purchases the remaining 30 percent of International Power to own 100 percent of the company. The North American corporate entity takes the name GDF SUEZ Energy North America.
